GTA 6: Everything You Need to Know About the Map, Cars, Characters & GTA 5 Differences

Published On: September 7, 2026

After years of waiting, GTA 6 is finally starting to feel real. Rockstar has now shown much more of the game than fans had previously seen, giving us a closer look at Vice City, Jason and Lucia, vehicles, police chases, side activities, combat, and the overall world.

The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. And based on what Rockstar has shown so far, GTA 6 isn’t simply going to be GTA 5 with better graphics. It looks like Rockstar is rebuilding many parts of the open-world experience around a much more interactive world.

So, what do we actually know about GTA 6 right now? Let’s break down the map, cars, characters, and the biggest differences from GTA 5.

GTA 6 Map: More Than Just Vice City

The first thing most players want to know about GTA 6 is the map.

GTA 5 gave players Los Santos and the surrounding areas of Blaine County. GTA 6 moves the series back to Vice City, but this time the city is part of a much larger fictional state called Leonida, inspired by Florida.

That means players won’t be spending the entire game inside a single city.

Rockstar’s footage has shown a mixture of dense city streets, beaches, rural areas, highways, waterways, islands, and more remote locations. Areas such as Port Gellhorn, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, and Mount Kalaga National Park give the world a much broader feel than a simple recreation of Miami.

This variety is important because GTA 6 appears to be designed around exploration. You can move from crowded streets and nightlife into quieter rural areas without feeling like you’re leaving the main game world.

There is also a lot of speculation about the exact size of the map. Some community estimates claim GTA 6 could be significantly larger than GTA 5, but Rockstar has not published an official square-kilometer figure. So it’s better to treat exact map-size numbers online as estimates rather than confirmed facts.

And that’s actually what makes the map interesting: it’s not just about being bigger. It’s about having more things happening inside it.

Jason and Lucia: The Heart of GTA 6

GTA 5 introduced three playable protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor.

GTA 6 takes a different approach with Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos.

The two characters are much more connected than GTA 5’s protagonists. Their relationship is an important part of the story, and Rockstar has presented them as partners trying to survive a criminal world together.

Lucia is particularly significant because she becomes the series’ first female protagonist in this kind of central role.

The pair also changes how character switching works.

Recent previews indicate that switching between Jason and Lucia can happen during certain missions and situations, while the story can also restrict switching when Rockstar wants a particular scene to play out a certain way. Outside missions, players are expected to have much more freedom to move between the two characters.

That makes GTA 6 feel different from GTA 5’s three-character system. Instead of following three separate criminals whose stories eventually connect, GTA 6 appears to put much more emphasis on the relationship between two people.

And that relationship could become one of the biggest reasons players remember the story.

GTA 6 Cars: What We Know So Far

Cars have always been one of the most important parts of Grand Theft Auto, and GTA 6 looks set to take driving much further.

Rockstar has already shown a wide range of vehicles, from sports cars and muscle cars to trucks, motorcycles, boats, and other forms of transportation.

But there is an important distinction here.

Because GTA 6 hasn’t been released yet, we don’t have a reliable final list of the fastest cars you can buy, their exact top speeds, or a confirmed performance ranking. Anyone publishing a definitive “top 10 fastest GTA 6 cars” list before release is likely relying on incomplete information.

What we do know is that Rockstar has been paying serious attention to the driving experience.

According to Rockstar’s co-studio head Rob Nelson, GTA 6 aims to combine some of the stronger driving characteristics of GTA 4 with the accessibility of GTA 5. The team has also worked on drivetrain, tires, suspension, and steering to create a more refined driving system.

That could make vehicle choice more meaningful.

Instead of simply choosing a car because it has the highest top speed, players may care more about handling, acceleration, road conditions, off-road performance, and how a vehicle behaves during a chase.

And considering how much larger and more varied Leonida appears to be, having the right vehicle could become a major part of exploring the map.

GTA 6 vs GTA 5: The Biggest Differences

The easiest way to understand GTA 6 is to compare it with GTA 5.

The most obvious difference is the setting.

GTA 5 takes place mainly around Los Santos and Blaine County, while GTA 6 moves to modern-day Leonida and Vice City.

The second major difference is the protagonists. GTA 5 had three: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. GTA 6 focuses on Jason and Lucia.

But the differences go much deeper than that.

A More Interactive World

GTA 5 had plenty of activities, but GTA 6 appears to push interaction much further.

Recent gameplay footage and previews show contextual interactions that allow characters to interact with objects and people more naturally. Activities aren’t simply background decorations anymore; the world is designed to feel more responsive.

This includes things such as sports, boating, diving, basketball, kayaking, dirt biking, nightlife, and other activities around Leonida.

The result is a world that feels less like a collection of missions and more like a place where you can simply spend time.

A More Advanced Police System

Police chases are another area where GTA 6 appears to be changing the formula.

Rather than simply getting wanted stars and driving until you escape, the game introduces more detailed systems around how police identify and pursue you.

Recent gameplay coverage has shown changes to the wanted interface, police behavior, disguises, and how the player can attempt to escape attention.

That could make criminal activities feel much more unpredictable.

A robbery may not end with the same familiar “get in a car and lose the cops” routine every time.

More Realistic Combat and Movement

GTA 6 also appears to borrow some of the grounded design philosophy seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Combat looks more detailed, character movement is more natural, and interactions feel less dependent on traditional menus.

Weapons and equipment also appear to be handled differently, making the player think more about what they’re carrying rather than simply having an enormous invisible inventory.

These changes may sound small individually, but together they can make the game feel dramatically different from GTA 5.

Why GTA 6 Could Feel Much Bigger Than GTA 5

The biggest improvement may not actually be the graphics.

It could be density.

GTA 5 already had an impressive map, but GTA 6 appears to be filling its world with more activities, characters, locations, interactions, and systems.

The recent Extended Look alone revealed a huge variety of gameplay, including shootouts, police pursuits, sports, water activities, driving, character interactions, and different parts of Leonida.

That matters because an open-world game doesn’t feel big simply because the map is physically large.

It feels big when you can keep discovering something new.

And that’s exactly what Rockstar seems to be aiming for with GTA 6.

What About GTA 6 Online?

One thing we still don’t have a complete answer for is GTA 6 Online.

Rockstar has revealed a great deal about the single-player experience, but there isn’t yet a full official picture of how GTA Online’s successor will work or when it will launch.

So if you see articles claiming to know the exact GTA 6 Online release date, features, businesses, prices, or economy, be careful. Much of that information is still speculation.

For now, the safest thing to focus on is what Rockstar has actually shown.

Final Thoughts

GTA 6 is shaping up to be much more than a visual upgrade to GTA 5.

The return of Vice City, the larger Leonida setting, the relationship between Jason and Lucia, improved driving, more detailed police systems, deeper interactions, and a wider range of activities all point toward a more immersive open-world experience.

The most interesting part is that Rockstar doesn’t appear to be relying on one huge feature to sell the game.

Instead, it is improving hundreds of smaller details.

And that’s probably what could make GTA 6 feel truly different once players finally get their hands on it.

With the release currently scheduled for November 19, 2026, we won’t have to wait forever to find out whether GTA 6 actually delivers on all the promises and expectations surrounding it.
