How a Girl From a Mississippi Farm Became Oprah

Published On: October 2, 2026

Oprah Winfrey was born in 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She spent her first years on her grandmother’s farm, in a household where money was scarce. She has joked that her first audience was the animals on the farm, and in a way that tells you a lot. She was a talker, even then.

Later she lived with her mother in Milwaukee, and then with her father in Nashville, where she has said strict rules and a respect for education made a big difference to her. She did well at school and she was good at speaking.

The radio break

At 17 she won a local pageant in Tennessee. The prize helped lead to a job at a Nashville radio station, WVOL, and a scholarship to Tennessee State University. Soon she was reading the news on air. By 19 she was an anchor on local television.

Baltimore, then Chicago

In 1976 she moved to Baltimore. Reporting was not an easy fit for her at first, but when she moved to a local talk show called People Are Talking, something clicked. She was warm, curious and genuinely good at listening.

In 1984 she was offered a spot hosting AM Chicago, a morning show that was struggling in the ratings. Within a year, it had overtaken its rivals. The show was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show, and in 1986 it went national. She also formed her own company, Harpo, which is simply her name spelled backwards.

Beyond the talk show

Over the years she acted in films (including an Oscar-nominated role in The Color Purple), launched a book club that turned novels into bestsellers, started a magazine, and created her own network, OWN, in 2011. The talk show itself ran for 25 years. She became a billionaire along the way.

What stands out most is that she did not try to copy the hosts who came before her. She leaned into who she was, and audiences noticed. Sometimes the thing that makes you different is the thing that makes you worth watching.
